Vertebral Compression Fracture
What is a Vertebral Compression Fracture?
A vertebral compression fracture occurs when a bone in the spine (vertebra) collapses or cracks, often due to bone weakening from conditions like osteoporosis. Fractures can happen anywhere along the vertebral column, but they’re most likely to occur in the thoracic (mid- back) and lumbar (lower back) regions. The fracture can cause pain, and in some cases, can lead to spinal deformities.

Symptoms:

Sudden and persistent back pain

Diagnosis:

Imaging using X-rays, CT scans, or MRI
Treatment:

Vertebroplasty. Using fluoroscopy for guidance, the Surgeon uses a small needle to inject special quick-setting cement into your fractured vertebra. The cement provides support for the broken vertebra, strengthens the area, and usually results in pain relief.

Kyphoplasty. This surgery is a lot like vertebroplasty. However, before the cement is injected, small balloons are used to expand the fractured space to help make the vertebra taller. The balloons are removed and the empty space is then filled with cement.
